The election of Donald Trump as president of the United States has had serious repercussions around the globe. On Saturday, January 21^st, women around the world (and men as well), took to the streets to show their indignation and disdain for the man who will hold the reigns of the United States for the next four years.

Thousands upon thousands of people saying “NO” to his proposed plans of hatred and fascism.

 La elección de Donald Trump como presidente de los Estados Unidos ha tenido serias repercusiones en todo el mundo. El sábado 21 de enero, mujeres de todo el mundo (y también hombres) salieron a las calles para mostrar su indignación y desdén por el hombre al mando de los Estados Unidos durante los próximos cuatro años. Miles y miles de personas que dicen "NO" a sus planes de odio y fascismo.

I was in Oaxaca on that Saturday morning. There was a march that reflected the solidarity that was being felt worldwide in resistance to Donald Trump. It was a predominantly “gringo” crowd who were searching for a way to express our disbelief and disapproval of what was taking place in the US. It was our attempt to show the Mexicans, who are our neighbors, that we do not share the views of the man who has vowed to deport their family members and build a wall to separate us.

It was our way of letting our Mexican neighbors know that we are not one with him, that our ties and respect for the Mexican people remains in tact. As one sign in the march stated: “Keep the migrants; deport Trump.” If only that were possible.

Estuve en Oaxaca el sábado por la mañana. También ahí hubo una marcha que reflejó la solidaridad manifiesta en todo el mundo que resiste a Donald Trump. Una gran mayoría éramos "gringos", y así expresamos nuestra incredulidad y desaprobación con lo que ocurre en los Estados Unidos. Fue nuestra manera de mostrar a nuestros vecinos mexicanos, que no compartimos las opiniones del hombre que ha prometido deportar a sus familiares y construir un muro para separarnos. Así les hicimos saber que no estamos con él, y que nuestros lazos y nuestro respeto están con el pueblo de México. Como lo expresó una consigna en la marcha: “Que los migrantes se queden, deportemos aTrump”. Si eso fuera posible…

But in the resistance, there is hope. And what happens in the US deeply affects Mexico. May we continue in solidarity and friendship as global neighbors who both have to fight for our rights in our home countries.  A march is only a march, unless it continues and grows into something bigger and more powerful. I hope January 21^st was just the tip of the iceberg, that much bigger and better things will follow. It has to be.

Pero en la resistencia hay esperanza. Y lo que sucede en Estados Unidos afecta profundamente a México. Mantengamos nuestra solidaridad y amistad como vecinos globales y luchemos por nuestros derechos en nuestros países de origen. Una marcha es sólo una marcha, a menos que se sostenga y se convierta en algo más grande y poderoso. Espero que el 21 de enero sea sólo la punta del iceberg, que seguirán cosas mucho más grandes y mejores.

Así tiene que ser.
